Elastomers

Elastomers are natural or synthetic polymers with elastic properties which are essential for the oil seals.

NBR – Nitrile Rubber

Most commonly used elastomer for seals, recommended for sealing of fluids such as aliphatic oils, mineral oils, greases, hydraulic oils,  water or other water-based solutions.

The recommended temperature range for safe operating conditions varies from -30°C to + 110°C (up to 130°C intermittent).

YEI Specifications
Hardness (Shore) Temperature Range
A 60 to A 90 -30°C to + 110°C

PU – Polyurethane

Polyurethane combines hardness with elasticity, providing outstanding abrasion resistance and tear strength. Generally recommended for applications requiring outstanding physical properties.

Hardness (Shore) Temperature Range
A 60 to A 90 -30°C to + 110°C

FKM (Viton®) – Fluorinated Rubber

This elastomer has an excellent chemical and heat resistance. It offers the exceptional sealing for chlorinated solutions, oils (vegetable and mineral) and greases, aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, ozone.

YEI Specifications
Hardness (Shore) Temperature Range
A 70 to A 80 -20°C to + 200°C

CR – Chloroprene Rubber

Commonly known as “Neoprene”, this elastomer has good resistance to temperature changes, ozone and adverse weather conditions. Primarily used for gaskets and o-rings, and has a typical working temperature range  of  -35°C and +120°C.

EPDM – Ethylene-propylene rubber

This elastomer has a chemical structure that provides resistance to polar substances, such as water (both cold and boiling), hydraulic fluids, atmospheric agents and alkalis.

HNBR – Hydrogenated nitrile rubber

This hydrogenated form of NBR provides a much higher heat resistance, especially recommended for environments requiring heat, ozone and abrasion resistance. Although mostly used in the automotive industry, HNBR is also used in oil extraction, steel and paper mills industries.

YEI Specifications
Hardness (Shore) Temperature Range

VMQ- Silicone Rubber

Silicone rubber performs especially when when dealing with atmospheric agents, light and ozone. It is also highly desired when it is necessary to retain the seal’s physical properties in environments under excessively high or low temperature stress. Most used in medical and industrial applications where a non-reactive material is necessary.

ACM – Polyacrylate (ACM, PA) Rubber

This elastomer has excellent resistance to hot oils and oxidation, working best where there is contact with engine oils, transmission oils and hydraulic oils. Mostly used for transmissions in the automotive industry.

XNBRCarboxylated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

This improved version of the NBR is able to achieve higher resistance and stands lower temperatures. Best used for heavy industrial applications with high wear rate.

YEI Specifications
Color Hardness (Shore) Temperature Range
Black 80 -40°C to +100°C

NR- Natural Rubber

Non-synthetic rubber with high resilience and good abrasion resistance. Used mostly under circumstances requiring sealing of fluids such as ammonia, ethylene glycol, dilute acids and alkali, hot/cold water. Natural rubber is not suitable for use under conditions with hydrocarbon oil, UV radiation, oxygen, ozone.

SBR – Styrene-butadiene Rubber

The most widely used synthetic rubber in the world. Although its physical properties are somewhat less effective than natural rubber, SBR is tougher and slightly more resistant to heat and flex cracking. It can readily be substituted for natural rubber in many applications, thereby achieving significant cost savings.

PTFE – Polytetrafluoroethylene

Most commonly known as teflon, PTFE is a material with inert substance, which does not react with other chemical substances except in very special situations. For this reason, its toxicity is very low, allowing the material to be used widely in industries such as food industries. Its coefficient of friction is also very low, being ideal in situations demanding greater chemical resistance and performance compared to other materials commonly used in seals.
